Some individuals still believe that receiving your first deck as a gift is essential for a proper initiation into Tarot. If that's holding you up, feel free to know that this experience is your gift. Honestly, I definitely "judge a book by its cover" when buying a new deck. Or, reputation. So, holding the deck in your hand and feeling if it is "right" for you is certainly one way to go about choosing a new deck. However, there are a few alternatives available that can help you make a much more educated choice. Some stores will have open decks available to look through, so be sure to ask. This will vary from shop to shop, as an opened deck cannot be returned, and the extra investment is more than many stores can afford. We are lucky these days to have access to the Internet. Carry a journal to jot down notes if you prefer. Later, read the card interpretation in the guidebook and observe how it enhances your personal experience. What I was taught to do when I got a deck: I was taught to open a new deck, touch all the cards, sage them, and then put them in the highest spot in the room for the night (if it's a full moon, put them in a windowsill to absorb the moonlight). Then, I touch each card, connect with them and get to know the deck. What does "Cut the Deck" Mean? I was taught to "Cut the Deck" to start a reading. That is after I've asked a very clear question to the universe and have been shuffling, I drop 1/2 the deck on the table. The card in my right hand is what card will lead the reading. That's what "cutting the deck" means to me. When a card(s) pops out of the deck while shuffling does it have any significance? I was taught it's critical to your reading. I call them "jumpers". In general, it has been my experience that anything that hap­pens during the course of doing a reading that calls attention or gives added emphasis to any card should be regarded as potential­ly useful. There are some instances when reversed cards can be viewed in just this way. Also, cards that keep coming up from one spread to the next fall into this category.
