This tradition was started a long time ago when Tarot cards were almost impossible to come by. Usually, at that time, the only way to acquire a deck was to know somebody who practiced Nowadays, a wide array of Tarot decks are readily accessible in stores, online, and through catalogs. The challenge now lies in deciding which decks to choose from the abundance available. Some individuals still believe that receiving your first deck as a gift is essential for a proper initiation into Tarot. If that's holding you up, feel free to know that this experience is your gift.     Even when they're closed up in a box, Tarot decks do have their own personal energy, just like crystals! Honestly, I definitely "judge a book by its cover" when buying a new deck. Or, reputation. So, holding the deck in your hand and feeling if it is "right" for you is certainly one way to go about choosing a new deck. However, there are a few alternatives available that can help you make a much more educated choice. Some stores will have open decks available to look through, so be sure to ask. This will vary from shop to shop, as an opened deck cannot be returned, and the extra investment is more than many stores can afford. We are lucky these days to have access to the Internet. Below is a list of links to sites that feature pictures of hundreds of decks, as well as deck reviews. Together, these should give you a pretty good idea if a deck will appeal to you or not.
